In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, we came up with these adorable origami hearts made from our own catalogs. This recycled craft really says, “I heart the planet.” In just six simple steps you can fold old catalog and magazine pages, even shopping bags, into wonderful decorations. String a cluster of hearts from a tree branch, add them to gift wrapped packages, or send them in the mail with an earth-friendly greeting. When you learn how you can transform old materials, you’ll think twice before throwing anything away!

Materials Needed:
How to PDF
Old catalogs, magazines or shopping bags
Ribbon scraps
1/4″ hole punch (we know you or a friend has one…or more)
A fallen branch anticipating its new transformation
Instructions
1. Cut old catalogs, magazines or shopping bags into various sized squares. Follow the classic and simple origami heart directions in the How to PDF.
2. Fold as many hearts as your branch can hold. Hang each one with a bit of ribbon by punching a hole in the main body of each heart.
3. Hang branch in a window or feature on a wall.

This was a great idea, we used tree branches spray painted in white and placed in galvanized white buckets, then added the origami hearts streaming down, for a bridal shower. It was beautiful. I think i still have some pictures, i will have to send one for you to see how beautiful it was!!!!!
Great idea! I’ve been using scenic catalog and calendar scenes for some time in lieu of wrapping paper — people always seem pleased. This adds another dimension to the potential decoration. Thanks!

I am a art student teacher at an elementary school in Chicago and this week we did this project with our 5th-8th grade classes. It turned out AWESOME and the kids absolutely LOVED it! We are now in the process of hanging them up all over the school. It fits perfectly since Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday.
