One of the most stylish gals I have ever met is getting married in June, so it was not surprising to receive a gorgeous peacock-inspired wedding invitation, which set the tone for what is sure to be a beautiful night in the Virgin Islands. There was also no surprise in discovering that the blues and greens used in her wedding suite provided ample inspiration for this weekend’s bridal shower in her honor.
To keep with the bride’s theme, Lauren (hostess and maid of honor) used the Folk Ornament Printable Party Invitations, and tried something different with the Peacock Feather Rubber Stamp—by using food coloring and powdered sugar she created an elegant and edible glass plate design.
With a little experimentation, she found the perfect ratio of food coloring, powdered sugar and water. Lauren applied her edible paste to the rubber stamp with a paper towel to control coverage, then gently and evenly pressed the stamp onto the plate. The plates were placed on a large table to dry, and did so rather quickly.
Lauren was able to stack the plates for easy buffet service at the shower…but easy certainly did not look cheap, as this beautiful accent was a hit among shower guests. Bride-to-be, Jaime, was tickled by Lauren’s attentive detail and classy integration of her wedding theme.

I have to admit that I’m biased as the colors and peacock stamp are my favorites, however, this is truly thinking outside of the box. Ingenious, stunning, and oh-so-personal.

My only role in this entire project was the mad scientist who mixed the “paste,” unfortunately I do not remember the exact amounts. (Also why I am a cook and not a baker.)
We used a glass ramekin to mix, filling the bottom with 1/8-1/4 inch of green food coloring and adding powdered sugar slowly. The first trial was a little thin and the second was too clumpy, and a little water made it perfect. I would compare the “right” consistency to our PVA glue.
The color came from the standard green food coloring and the white from the sugar. You can play with other colors by mixing the primary colors. Just remember the sugar will make it a little lighter.
Trials are easy with this project because you just wash and dry the plate and the stamp. And, much to my surprise, it was not messy at all.

I appeared on a local tv segment and had designed an entire bridal shower theme around peacocks, blues, greens, etc. and this plate theme with your rubber stamp would have been a gorgeous delight.

To answer a few questions:
@Chelsea-Ann I do not have the exact quantities but if you start with sugar covering the bottom of a small bowl, then add coloring until you get your desired color (recommend slightly darker) and a splash of water, the consistency should be comparable to our PVA glue. Just play with it, adding and balancing until you find the right mix.
@Lesley We used old-fashioned liquid food coloring
@Ida We did use a new stamp, mostly because the peacock feather was perfect for the wedding inspiration.

Been a stamper for over 25 years, and a teacher for at least 20. I have never seen this technique before. I’m letting my art club know about it. Great for any party! I’m thinking tea party for the girls- poolside.

Thanks for the great idea! Just tested it out as a “practice run” for a butterfly-themed baby shower. I had some trouble with the “paste” consistency and my first few tries I had WAY too much of the paste on the stamp, but eventually I got a pretty nice effect. My stamp has more solid sections than yours did, I think it would work better with one more like yours, with lots of lines and not solid blocks. Still, definitely something I’ll use for the shower and other parties in the future, I am sure!
Just gorgeous! I love also that it allows you to use simple clear plates and match them to an event rather than buying paper plates for each and every party theme.

I was just on another site that showed rubber stamping on iced cookies, but the recipe was just for food coloring and water. I think that this idea could be converted to go on top of the decorated plate filling it with decorated cookies, also stamped. Love it. I have been buying stamps to use as imprints on cookies, but this would be so much better.
What about washing the plates after use?
