If your wedding is around the corner, shopping for the perfect invitation can be one of the most exciting first steps to planning the big day! No matter what style, color palette or design, there are a few things to keep in mind in terms of the wording of your invitation to ensure your guests are informed, as well as give your guests a first impression of the style of your special day. To make the process easier, we have outlined a few suggestions for how to word the invitations based on who is hosting the wedding and other key considerations.

Traditional Wording

If the bride’s parents are hosting the wedding, it’s traditional to leave off the bride’s last name and include the parent’s name(s) at the top of the invitation. In this situation, the groom’s last name should be included.

If the groom’s parents are involved in hosting, both the bride and groom’s last names may be included.

If the bride and groom are paying for the wedding themselves, the introduction on the invitation should begin with the request and you may skip the host line.

If everyone is paying for the wedding, it is customary to use wording such as, “Together with their families…” Or, “Together with their parents..”

If it is a same sex couple, the same rules apply! The host of the wedding is typically listed first, following the partner’s information. However if the couple is hosting, it may be listed in alphabetical order, though this depends on your preference.

Modern Wording
