Arguably one of Finland’s most prolific illustrators working today, Sanna Mander’s cheerful work pays homage to editorial illustrations of the 1960s with a contemporary twist. Her Ink on Paper Source collection was inspired by the luscious flora and fauna in her native Finland. Sanna’s images are mixed media odes to the unpredictable, cluttered joys of the world around her. “Since this was my first Paper Source collection, I wanted to share some Nordic vibes. There are some traditional “kurbits,” and joyful bits from everyday life,” she said.

Her history as an artist started during her school days. “My first commissioned project ever was a poster for our junior high school musical in Sweden. Since then, for almost 30 years I have worked broadly within the field of design. I haved designed textile patterns in Japan, I’ve illustrated oat milk packaging in Europe, and still design posters too!” she said. “Here in Scandinavia, I spot my illustrations in the supermarket. That makes me so happy and proud! I have to hinder myself not to tell everybody at the ice cream aisle, hey I drew that cute bee on that popsicle wrapper!”

“As a teenager in the 90’s my dearest hobby was pen paling. Receiving letters from all parts of the world with cool paper textures and different handwritings was so exciting. I crafted and decorated my own slams and friendship books, and that is probably how I got into graphic design!” she said.
She shared that her creative process starts on pen and paper. “Sketching is such a good way to build those creative brain muscles, so I sketch every morning. It might start as a to do-list that then sprawls out to visual ideas, combining elements and testing shapes. I try to incorporate visual puns in my art, and those are usually found while freely sketching without pressure.” She said. “I often begin with hand-made elements like ink, sometimes paper collage or art markers, then I scan some bits and proceed digitally. I’ve noticed that the hand-made part of the process keeps the final result organic, not too polished. I love seeing other artists’ personal handprint in their work, I hope mine shows as well!”

When it comes to her inspiration, she shared, “Right now I am into weird color combinations. In Finland this time of the year the light is very bright, and everything looks like technicolor. I like to draw things I daydream about, like lush gardens, magical everyday moments, being naughty, and imaginary friends. My style shifts somewhat between various projects, but my signature style could be described as whimsical, lavish and playful.”
“Whenever I’ve visited the US, I visit Paper Source. I still treasure some 10 years old cards and envelopes from there that are just too precious to use!” To explore Sanna Mander’s Ink on Paper Source collection click here, visit her website, and follow her on social.
