Tablescaping Tips with Talking Tables
Hosting is more than setting the table - it's a art form, at Talking Tables the creative team is made up of true artists! They aim to create celebration tables that are talked about, and they have us inspired. Today, they are sharing with us their favorite tips for building a beautiful tablescape.
1. Play with napkin styling
Having a napkin on the table is like having a small piece of art or decoration. Paper napkins provide a very cost effective and easy way to add instant color, pattern and creativity to your table setting and change the look. There are a number of ways you can use your paper napkin on the table:
- Folding into origami shapes (e.g. cutlery pouches, Christmas trees)
- Knotting into simple bows
- Unfolding lengthways under the plate for visible design
- Turning them into diamond shapes for easy impact

2. Layer and personalize place settings
Personalization will make your guests feel special – from place cards, to table favors, people love to be able to take something away to remember the occasion.
Why not mix charger plates, napkins, plates and celebration crackers for layering. Add:
- Small personalized favors in bowls or as napkin rings
- Embroidered ribbons with guests’ initials
- Mini handwritten menus for a memorable, tailored touch
These new stripey crackers include a drinks charm, the perfect little gift for your guest. Use the cracker to write their name on that can double up as a name place card too.
3. Add twinkle
Incorporate string lights into your tablescape for extra twinkle and ambient glow:
- Run lights down the center of the table
- Cluster in bowls or vases for glowing centerpieces
- Weave through garlands to create a soft, welcoming twinkle
4. Create height
Flowers and foliage are an easy way to add drama as well as more height to your tablescape. We love to use two or three single stems in a bud vase and have several scattered down the center randomly positioned alongside dinner candles and string lights. Combine dinner candles of different heights for a less formal dinner table.
Top tip: We like to add herbs into the tiny arrangements for a fresh but subtle scent.
5. Playful extras for the table
Instead of a tablecloth, we’ve seen a roll of wallpaper for the base of the table used. This is very effective, very neat and creates a great base for the tablescape with colours that you wouldn’t be able to achieve with tablecloths. This is also an affordable and alternative to expensive table linens. Furthermore, no ironing involved.
Small games are ideal for the table as it keeps the guests interacting and entertained without taking up any space. The are perfect for breaking the ice with guests who may not know each other.
