Forget freeze-dried astronaut meals and bags of stale, store-bought gorp-finally, here's cookbook that complements the magic of gathering around a campfire and sharing a meal with friends.

From the IACP Award-winning authors of The Picnic, which brought taste and style to eating outdoors (in the daytime), comes its companion, for leaving civilization behind and dining under the stars. A mix of dishes to make ahead and meals to cook on-site, The Campout Cookbook includes more than 75 recipes for wood-fired skillet pizzas; backcountry stews and chilies; fire-roasted vegetables and cast-iron breads; unexpected dips, jerkies, and high-energy bars; breakfasts to satisfy that yawning hunger that comes from sleeping in the fresh air; s'mores, of course (including Vanilla Bean Dream Marshmallows & Co. and Dark Chocolate Raspberry Caramel Fire-Ban S'mores); and cocktails, coolers, warm libations for chilly nights, and a Blood Orange Bug Juice.

Plus there's inspiration and know-how for every avid camper and enthusiastic neophyte: How to find a suitable campsite and build a campfire specifically for cooking over, and how to keep it going. Stargazing for city slickers. A troubleshooting guide. And the definitive packing list and camp kitchen essentials. Just add a few scary stories for a truly memorable campout.

"Spells out how to eat well when camping out." -The Washington Post

"This is the rare book that considers campfire cookery as a gustatory pursuit." -Sierra, the National Magazine of the Sierra Club

This spectacular book is so much more than I ever expected! It’s t . . .

"This spectacular book is so much more than I ever expected! It’s the elegant evening companion to The Picnic, the award-winning cookbook by the same authors. This one boasts 76 delish recipes — all cocktails and hot libations, fire-roasted vegetables, wood-fired skillet pizzas, hearty stews and chilies. Even campfire standards like s’mores done up right with dark chocolate, raspberries and caramel. Can you even imagine? And not to be outdone by the recipes alone are these imaginative extras, per the publisher’s note: “How to find a suitable campsite and build a campfire specifically for cooking over, and how to keep it going. Stargazing for city slickers. A troubleshooting guide. And the definitive packing list and camp kitchen essentials. Just add a few scary stories for a truly memorable campout. ” Plus that cover that glows like embers. 5/5 Stars ‘though I’d love to grant it so many s’more! Pub Date 29 May 2018 Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine. #TheCampoutCookbook #NetGalley"

Some familiar favorites (chili, biscuits, fried fish) and some new . . .

"Some familiar favorites (chili, biscuits, fried fish) and some new ideas (jello shots, cinnamon rolls, and Mexican recipes. ) Relatively complicated recipes make me think this is for a cook that doesn't mind spending most of their day in camp in the camp kitchen, and kids aren't involved, or the kids are willing to eat ""adult"" food. While everyone is canoeing and hiking, the cook is kneading dough, etc. If you expect meals that are quick and pre-prepared, this isn't the cookbook, but wow, these recipes are mouthwatering, inventive and I'd love to bring someone along to prepare these meals while I""m having fun at camp. Since that's not going to happen, I'm cooking them in my kitchen. At home. Favorites: Chorizo Skillet Nachos (ahhhhh, so good!) Figgy Pecan Crackers and whipped feta. Surprisingly easy! And Yum. Cast Iron Dutch Baby with Grilled Peaches is my kids favorite."

This book was so much fun! So much more than just a cookbook, it h . . .

"This book was so much fun! So much more than just a cookbook, it had everything from healthy, delicious looking recipes to tips on virtually every aspect of camping! As an avid longtime (and sometimes full-time) camper myself it was great to see so many little helpful tidbits for those just heading out into the woods as well as some awesome ideas for our next trip out. So much more informative than any camping cookbook I've seen - Humourous and inspirational stories and tidbits like 12 different ways to make a s'more and a huge list of delicious sounding pancake toppers. Helpful tips about foraging, pets, wildlife, fun illustrations, even car games and fun for the kids! Fabulous book and beautiful cover - Highly recommended for both new and longtime campers!"

I had never heard of a campfire cookbook and since my family and I . . .

"I had never heard of a campfire cookbook and since my family and I live close to the beach and enjoy having evening fires and dinner on the beach in the summer, I was excited to get this book. There are a lot of great ideas in the book: such a campfire cookery toolkit and thermos cocktail recipes, fun new takes on a traditional s'more and a recipe for homemade marshmallows. I really appreciated that there were several fish recipes that could be prepared right on site, around the fire, which is perfect for our beach-side campfires. This was an interesting and different concept for a book and one that did not disappoint."
