Meet Hartland Cards, a New York based brand that creates stationery products that are graphic, saturated, and cheerful. For their Ink on Paper Source collection, Emily Johnson designed custom wedding suites that feature bold botanicals in an exuberant color story. “This collaboration is exactly how I envisioned offering my work to a wider audience. I love the gold foil options, and I am thrilled with how they came out,” she said. “I've done a few weddings throughout my career, so I had some really special invitations to draw from. I also referenced my favorite romantic and cheerful florals from my existing collection. Betty's Garden thank you card is a favorite in Paper Source, so it was an easy choice to expand it into a wedding suite.”

Emily started Hartland Cards in 2012 while working in the fashion industry in NYC. “I designed a tiny line of stationery mostly as a creative outlet. I listed them on Etsy and eventually shared them with the owner of a local paper store, and she placed my first wholesale order.” Now she works out of her storefront and studio in Leeds, NY where all their products are packed and shipped.

She draws inspiration from her daily life, nature, and vintage textiles. She starts her creative process by sketching ideas on paper before planning out the color story in Procreate. “When I first started selling to Paper Source, I hand-painted the neon on each and every card. Digital printing cannot achieve neon, so until I could print at the quantity I do today, I was adding them with paint!”

“It’s really important to have a creative outlet that you keep for your own personal enjoyment and growth. I am drawn to natural materials and find that working with paper and clay are my favorite mediums,” she said. “I love painting on pottery and crossing my fingers it makes it through the kiln firing. Make something with your hands! It always makes you feel better.”

She shared that it never gets old to see her designs carried at Paper Source. “Whenever I run across a Paper Source I have to pop in and see if I can find any of my cards.  My family and friends love to send me pictures of my cards in the stores. Paper Source gives my work a huge outreach in their stores, and my cards can touch so many more people than I could have imagined. I have to stop and remind myself that every card I pack and ship will be sent to someone special, and that really is something.” She said.

"I love that stationery is an affordable and accessible piece of art that everyone can enjoy. I’m proud to be able to offer my work to whomever may be interested. Art is for everyone and everyone needs art." When asked what is most rewarding about designing for Hartland Cards, Emily shared, "That I can help people send a meaningful message via snail mail in the age of instant gratification and an increasing digital world. I want people to feel the texture of the paper, and to prop a card on their desk that reminds them of friends and experiences on this big, beautiful planet. I'm proud, and honored, when someone chooses my work for a special day, especially when it’s for something once in a lifetime.”
