The first book in the New York Times bestselling Rainbow Fish series.

The rainbow fish with its iridescent scales is the most beautiful fish in the whole ocean. But since he is also vain and proud, he becomes more and more lonely over time. Then he realizes that you can’t win friends through beauty. He overcomes his pride and begins to distribute his glitter scales to the other fish.

Eye-catching foil stamping, glittering on every page, offers instant child appeal, but it is the universal message at the heart of this simple story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions that gives the book its lasting value.

Pretty illustrations, don’t love message

"I remember this book from when I was a child so decided to get it to read to my son. He loved the images but I didn’t like the message he got from the story. It didn’t seem like sharing, but more like buying friends. Give them all you have or they won’t play with you. I’ve always been a push over so I really felt this. I do on the other hand recommend Rainbow fish to the rescue. Waaay better message about standing up for what’s right and accommodating others. We read it after the first one and just to show how terrible the message was in the first one my son recommended that he break his last scale into pieces to share with more fish. But what about rainbow fish? Is he not allowed to have anything to call his own?"

"I remember loving this book as a child, but as an adult I have some mixed feelings. I still find it magical and alluring, but there are some possible hidden messages about giving in to peer pressure and needing to conform in order to be accepted. That is probably just my adult brain over thinking it, because the only thing I remember learning from it as a child was that sharing was good. Still a great book!"

"This is a cute little picture book about a vain fish which loves its beautiful rainbow scales more than anything. . . . until it realizes that its own vanity and selfishness has made it the loneliest fish in the sea, even if it WAS the most beautiful. An endearing story about how friendship and giving is more important than outer beauty."

The Rainbow Fish

"The Rainbow Fish is a heartwarming children's book about a fish with beautiful sparkly scales that lives in the deep, blue sea with all the other little fish. One day, a little fish asked Rainbow Fish for one of his many special, sparkly scalaes. Rainbow Fish wouldn't let him have any, which made this little fish very upset, so he told all his little fishy friends that Rainbow wouldn't share, and soon enough there was no one to admire his beautiful scales anymore. Rainbow didn't know what to do, so he went to the starfish for some advice. Starfish didn't know what to do either so he sent him to the wise Octopus. If you want to find out what the Octopus said, you will have to read the book to find out. The way Marcus Pfister wrote this story has its ups and downs. Pfister wrote it with not to many exciting words, and his storyline follows any other typical children's book, which may make it a little less interesting to read. However, its slow pace and good messages makes it a great book for younger children. It's an easy read with only 13 pages, written in 3rd person point of view. Plus, it has lots of pictures. I think The Rainbow Fish is an inspiring book for the young readers, being that it gives plenty of good messages for them to take in. It reminds all of us that it's not what's on the inside that counts, it's what's on the outside. Also, it reminds them that sharing make you happy!! This book is a Christopher Award Winner, American Bookseller Abby Award Winner, and a proud IRA-CBC Children's Choice. I recommend this book to young children. I give it 3 out of 5 stars"
