How To Tie the Perfect Knot

Spice up your gift wrapping routine and learn how to tie a knot. A no-frills alternative to tying a bow, it adds a simple finishing touch to your gift wrapped packages. Tying a knot is an especially good option when you're shipping packages - it won't get crushed in the mail. Materials include ribbon and scissors.

Knot Tying 1 Step 1: Measure ribbon by wrapping around the box going from edge to edge (about 1 1/2 times around the box). Sharp scissors are a must for trimming ribbon edges. Make sure to leave enough ribbon so you can trim the edges again after your knot is tied, if necessary. Knot Tying 2 Step 2: Hold ribbon taut around the box. With your right hand pull the length of ribbon on the left up and under to create a single tie, as you would when tying your shoe. Knot Tying 3 Step 3: Place a finger of your right hand on the tie to hold the tension. Switch hands and repeat the action of creating a tie from the other side (holding the tension with a finger will create a smooth, even knot).
Knot Tying 4 Step 4: With a finger on your left hand holding the first tie tight and in place, pull ribbon length over your single tie diagonally and hold down with your fingers. Knot Tying 5 Step 5: Pull bottom ribbon length up and over to create a loop over the single tie. Knot Tying 6 Step 6: Pull the ribbon length through the loop you have created to make a second tie. Pull tight in a horizontal fashion.
Knot Tying 7 Step 7: Using both hands straighten and flatten out the knot in the middle of your ribbon. Knot Tying 8 Step 8: To create even edges, take your two ribbon tails and pull together to measure them at the same place (this ensures they are cut at the same length). Cut at any angle. Knot Tying 9 Step 9: Finish with a gift tag to make your gift special and unique!
